Canceling AWS

Posted by Grego on January 13, 2015

I’m writing about this post because I’m very upset with amazon. It wasn’t very easy to figure out how to cancel their AWS services and unfortunately I didn’t find much help on the internet either. The common belief is that they hide it on purpose. I just wanted to stop them from billing me. So I closed all my resources that I thought I had open (which wasn’t very much) but the bill kept increasing.

Finally I sent an email to amazon through their ticket support system one morning before work. A week later I am still getting billed. Just this morning I put a second ticket into aws support. This time instead of selecting “web” as best contact method I selected “Phone” and entered my phone number. I was instantly connected with a support representative who walked me through the steps. It’s very trivial.

Sorry, there are no screenshots. I canceled my account and I can no longer log in.

  1. Log in to AWS Management console.
At the top right of your screen is a black bar with your full name, the location you are managing and a third option (I think it’s the help/support menu)
  2. click your name on this black bar and select My Account.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the screen
  4. Click “Close Account” and tick the checkbox that you agree to cancel your services.

They told me if I want to reopen my account to put in another ticket. However since I’m unable to log into AWS console I’m not sure how to do that. If you’re worried about later reinstating your account place a support ticket and talk to someone on the phone.
